On Saturday, April 8, one of us, Louis Plante, died waiting for a second pulmonary transplant. In addition to being involved in our organization several years, Louis is known to be the inventor of the Frequencer, a respiratory physiotherapy device used by several people living with cystic fibrosis. The creation of this device results from Louis’s observations, as indicated on the website of Dymedso, which marketed it:
“It all started with Louis Plante, a 26-year-old patient with cystic fibrosis who woke up one morning wondering why he had to leave a concert several months earlier because he coughed too much. He thought he might have been sitting too close to a loudspeaker and that sound could be the cause. Being a good electronics technician, Louis began working on a device capable of generating low frequencies. The results of the tests on Louis were so astonishing that even his doctor could not believe it. ”
Louis Plante received several international awards following his invention. The Frequencer allows thousands of patients throughout America who suffer from chronic respiratory problems to release their airways. In August 2015, TVA Nouvelles also pointed out that after presenting the device to the prestigious MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he became the first Canadian to receive the Patient Innovation Award from a university in Portugal.
Ten years after his pulmonary transplantation, he took the courageous decision to embark on a second intervention. Unfortunately, time was short.
Today we want to pay tribute to this man who has not given up on the disease and has made a significant change in the lives of many people who live with cystic fibrosis. We also appeal to everyone to emphasize, once again, the importance of organ donation. If he could not receive the second transplant in time, he received a first gift of life that allowed him to live several more years by first foiling cystic fibrosis. He has been able to bring happiness to his loved ones and to make the whole of our community benefit from his talents.
A few days before his death, recognizing the care he received, Louis contacted our Executive Director to highlight the extraordinary work of his two medical teams, the University Hospital of Sherbrooke (CHUS) and the CHUM Notre-Dame Hospital. His message will be broadcast in its entirety in the next edition of the VIVRE Express, as he had expressed it.
To our loved ones and all those who knew him, our most sincere condolences.
Louis, thank you for your contribution to people living with cystic fibrosis, all over the world!
